Happy New Year View Our Past Newsletters >>

As we begin the new year, we look forward to ISS Long Beach, which takes place in just a couple of days.  We are excited to introduce at the show our new inks and more print samples using our latest inks.  Our Applications Manager, Ed Branigan, and the rest of our production team have been hard at work these past months creating new displays for our booth.  We will have live printing demonstrations featuring our latest inks.  Read more below for scheduling details.
At the end of November ‘07, we held a very successful training seminar at our California Headquarters.  We invited local distributors and customers to attend a series of workshops covering basic, advanced and specialty printing.  The feedback we received was phenomenal.  We look forward to seeing all the attendees at the ISS show!  Read on for some of the comments we received.
We are hitting the ground running this new year and are looking forward to a great year!  If you are attending ISS Long Beach, please be sure to stop by and visit us at booth - #1933.  See you there!

GEN IV Update

Original Art by Great Dane Graphics

International Coatings introduced the new GEN IV™ PVC-free, plastisol alternative ink at SGIA to rave reviews.  Since then, we have tested the ink again and again to assure top performance and quality.  We adjusted the formulation to make it smoother for printing on automatics and fine-tuned various printing properties of the ink series.
We are now finally set to send out samples to our distributors and customers for testing.  This amazing eco-friendly ink has a very soft hand and the opacity is superb!
Be sure to see a sample at the Green Pavillion exhibit at the ISS Long Beach show and come by our booth for more samples and live printing demonstrations!

ISS Fever

It’s show time!  Over this past year, International Coatings has expanded its product line to include eco-friendly inks, low-curing inks, special effects inks and digital transfer papers.  We continue to develop exciting products and can’t wait to show you the new print samples and techniques we’ve created.

This year, we’re also featured in the Green Pavillion exhibit at the show, so be sure to check out our print samples using our GEN IV inks.

New Products:

International Coatings will introduce some exciting new products at the ISS show.  Come by our booth to see our print samples and stay to view our print demos!

•  Brand New:  3811 Granite Base™ will dry to a hard, rock-like substrate.  Can be used for special effects printing and combined with foil or other special effects inks (see new technique in our Print Technique Spotlight section below).

•  Brand New:  7040 Blocker Gray™ will block dyes from bleeding through to your print designs.  Super effective as an underbase!

•  Brand New:  Our new 3802 Foil Resist does exactly that, and prevents foil from sticking to the parts of your design that you want to keep clear.  Great for using on special effects printing.

New:  3810 BlowOut Base will form into a spongy, puffy, raised product once the ink is cured in the dryer.  Great for creating textured effects.

•  New:  International Coatings’ Water-Base Discharge Ink works great on dark fabrics to create dimensional effects.

•  New: Gen IVPVC-Free, Eco-Friendly Plastisol Alternative Ink made a big splash at the SGIA show.  Customers love the opacity and the soft feel of the prints.

•  UltraMixÒ 7900 Low-Cure, Phthalate-Free Color Mixing Series can save you up to 20% on energy consumption.  We have created colors that are more opaque for better coverage on darks.

•  7038 Cotton Value-White is a very opaque white with all the great plastisol qualities you’ve come to expect from ICC.  Yet, we are offering this ink at a value price!

•  FOREVER Ink-Jet Dark Digital Transfer Paper for vibrant colors, opacity and outstanding durability.

Successful IC Seminar

Right after Thanksgiving, we held a two-day print workshop at IC headquarters.  Seminar topics ranged from preparing artwork to screen making, screen emulsions, ink spot process, HD and special effects inks, automatic, and manual printing.

International Coatings could not have pulled off this seminar without the participation of the following industry experts who excel in their fields of expertise:  Charlie Taublieb on art and screen printing in general, Richard Greaves from Ulano on emulsions, Rolley Bateman from Stretch Devices on screens, and Shannon Booth from M&R on equipment.  Together with our in-house screen printing experts, they covered many techniques, provided a lot of information and industry insight.

Feedback from the attendees was extremely positive.  Here are excerpts of just some of the comments:

“I just wanted to take the time and say thank you the seminar was awesome.”

“I really appreciated the screen print classes and feel they boosted me to a (new) level.”

“With all the experts combined in one seminar, it felt like learning over 40+ years worth of experience in just two days.”

“Would love to attend again.”

A heartfelt “thank you” to the experts who traveled far and wide to teach at the seminar and to all the attendees for coming!

We will be scheduling other workshops through the year, so please let us know if you would like to participate.

Charlie’s Corner

Charlie Taublieb just returned from FESPA India where he checked out the latest trends and opportunities.  Here are some of his observations:

I attended and conducted seminars at FESPA India in Delhi and met with quite a lot of garment screen printers while there.  India is a country that probably pays less than China and I was interested to see if they would be able to take on much of the work being offered by the large corporations.

What I was most interested in was the state of screen printing there and if India was going to be a factor in terms of their expertise.  Although I met some very good and even an excellent printer –Tarun Printing Works, winners of many SGIA and FESPA awards- the technical expertise in the country is quite low.

Part of the reason is their economic state and also their sanitary conditions.  It’s difficult to make great screens when the water is not as clean as it should be.  This is not necessarily the case at all shops, but it is in many.

The costs of ink and emulsion are also a factor.  Much of the printing is done with water based inks because it is less expensive than plastisol.

There is a school for training printers – Dhirubai Mistry Institute for Print Education, Research & Training- but it focuses mostly on the graphic side and not textiles, although Bhargav Mistry says he will bring in textile equipment and conduct classes in that area soon.

Overall, India will be able to do the easy, less complex work for mass retailers, but not much of the complex work.

Thank you,
Charlie Taublieb

Print Technique Spotlight

Our own Ed Branigan has done it again!  In this edition of our newsletter, Ed is showcasing this textured technique he has invented using our BlowOut Base as an under coat and our Granite Base as an overcoat.

Here’s Ed’s recipe on how to achieve this awesome textured look.

You will need 3 screens as follows:

1st screen
• Use a mixture of 90% 3810 BlowOut™ Base and 10% Black Color Concentrate (you can use other colors, of course) on a 25 mesh screen

• Flash the ink (10 seconds)

2nd screen
• Print your design again using the mixture of 90% 3810 BlowOut™ Base and10%Black CC, using the 25mesh screen

• Flash (10 seconds)

3rd screen
• On the third screen, use a mixture of 90% 3811 Granite Base™ and 10%Black CC on a 40 mesh screen

• Cure @ 380 degrees for 2 minutes and voila, you’ve got an amazing textured design.

 Here’s to a great 2008!

Wishing you a successful and prosperous year.

See you at the show.
